Rare Massachusetts December 7, 1775 8d Sword in Hand Note

    Massachusetts December 7, 1775 8d PCGS Apparent Fine 15.
We have not been able to offer one of these notes previously according to the data in our archives. There were sixteen denominations for this issue, with the eight pence notes being the lowest of those. Of those sixteen, it carries the highest value in the Friedberg reference, although Newman does not differentiate values among most of the notes. Although PCGS has not released a Colonial census, PMG's records indicate they have graded only one example, a Fine 12. Not surprisingly, these notes are quite popular with collectors as they were printed by Paul Revere and include the "Sword in Hand" vignette. The signer of this piece appears to have been I. Morgan. The note does have a number of problems that resulted in the apparent grade as listed by PCGS- splits, tears and repairs, center split repaired. All of those factors considered, the note certainly retains plenty of eye appeal and charm. That, added to the scarcity of these notes, should command a premium.
