Massachusetts Continental Loan Office Bill of Exchange July 5, 1780 Choice Extremely Fine. Listed as US 105 in Anderson's The Price of Liberty and as a low R6 indicating 21 to 30 examples known to exist, but this is the first we've seen. It's printed entirely in red and green, which combined with the typical dark brown handwritten parts makes it one of the more colorful pieces of fiscal paper. The top border, which is printed in a deep green, shows a plow and a sailing ship with the elaborately engraved word AMERICA between them. It's signed by Francis Hopkinson, who also signed the Declaration of Independence. There are a few light folds and a small ink erosion hole in the Hopkinson signature, but this flashly colorful piece has the appearance of a fully uncirculated item. According to Anderson, Francis Hopkinson also designed the ornate borders on this piece. It's not the rarest piece of fiscal paper we have handled, but certainly the most attractive.
