    High Grade Sword-in-Hand Massachusetts Note

Massachusetts August 18, 1775 40s Very Fine-Extremely Fine. A beautifully margined example of this rare and extraordinarily popular Massachusetts issue. The note was engraved both face and back by colonial forefather Paul Revere, and it was also printed by him. The act date of the note is four months to the day after Revere's famed ride. The note is absolutely flawless for the grade save for a very minor edge split at the left of the center fold and an insignificant ink blot at the bottom of the back. The printing on both sides is razor sharp, and the signatures are in three different color inks, as was intended by the issuing authority. The vignette of the continental soldier with his raised sword in his right hand and the Magna Charta in his left is one of the most evocative designs of the period. This is one of the finer examples we've seen of this issue. The note is unpriced in either Newman or Friedberg above the Fine grade. A beautiful historic and rare piece of Colonial Currency.
