    Description

Massachusetts 6% Treasury Certificate July 20, 1779 Anderson MA-19 PMG Very Fine 30, pen cancelled.
The Pine Tree Surrounded by a Rattlesnake vignette is clean and sharp on this Low R-6 (21-30 known) certificate which is listed as MA-19 in the Anderson tome. These certificates were misattributed for many years as the work of Paul Revere. They were in actuality executed by Nathaniel Hurd, a contemporary competitor of Revere. The officer's name who originally received this certificate is penned in the margin at lower right, "Ens(ig)n Wm. Richard." The low commissioned officer ranks of ensign and cornet were abolished in the United States Army by the Army Organization Act of 1815.
