Massachusetts 1779 Fiscal Paper. These six-percent Treasury Certificates are visually quite similar to the advance-pay-to-officers Certificates. They share the same Pinetree and Rattlesnake vignette, and very similar border cuts. The difference is in their usage, with these certificates used to pay the winners in the state lottery. This particular example is listed in Anderson as MA 15, with a rarity rating of R-4 (76 to 200 survivors.) This has got to be one of the better ones, as it grades fully Extremely Fine with no problems whatever. At a glance, it appears to be uncanceled, but that is simply due to the fading of the red ink that was used to cross out Gardner's signature. The signature remains bold. A beautiful piece of revolutionary-war-period fiscal paper.
