    Massachusetts October 18, 1776 4 Shillings Fr. MA-232 PCGS Extremely Fine 45.
The Paul Revere-engraved face plate was first used on this issue. Overall there are two dates and back styles for the "Codfish" bills. The 1776 notes with the John Gill backs are much scarcer than the later 1778 notes, especially so in high grades. Because these notes are earlier, the plate generally exhibits stronger printing clarity, resulting in a sharper look compared to the corresponding notes from 1778. The face is perfectly centered and boldly printed. The Gill back is shifted slightly to the right, but also crisply printed and nicely detailed. These are underrated, especially compared to the 1778 "Codfish" bills.
    From the Hunter Collection.
