36s November 17, 1776 Sword In Hand - The Newman Plate Note

    Massachusetts November 17, 1776 36s PCGS Extremely Fine 40.
An extremely rare sword in hand issue, unpriced in any grade in either Newman or Friedberg, this note is the plate note from the Newman Fifth Edition plated in color both face and back on page 213. It also served as the plate note in Clarence S. Brigham's Paul Revere's Engravings published in 1969. Three examples of this issue have auctioned in the past decade, a VF 10s in May 2005 realized $8,050 and a VF 14s at that same sale realized $7,475. Newman quotes an Extremely Fine 36s as having sold in February 2006 for $16,675. PCGS has not as yet released a census for Colonial notes, but it is a reasonably safe bet that this is the finest they have graded. It is boldly signed, wonderfully margined, and a real treasure for the Massachusetts specialist or anyone assembling an extraordinary Thirteen Colony set.
