Very Rare Massachusetts 1708 40s Note - Known only as a Contemporary Counterfeit

Massachusetts November 17, 1708 40s Contemporary Counterfeit PCGS Apparent Extremely Fine 40.
Previously lot 24008 from the Stack's Bowers August 2013 sale. They devoted a full page to this incredible rarity and mention that were it genuine, it would easily be a $50,000 note, and they are certainly correct. Very few examples of this issue survive in any grade, and all of the few known survivors are counterfeits. PCGS has assigned the apparent grade for small edge splits and minor restorations. Based on the 2013 photo, the restoration is the masking of a stain and the repair of a short edge split. Estimated at $8000 to $10,000 in 2013, it realized $5885, a number that should very easily be eclipsed this evening.
