Ex-Boyd Ex-Stacks 5/2004 - The Only Example Graded by Either Service

    Massachusetts May 1, 1741 2s PCGS Very Fine 35.
Previously part of the F.C.C. Boyd Estate and then on to Stacks' May 11, 2004 sale where it was lot 524. This is an incredible note for both grade and rarity. All four signatures are crisp and clean, as is every letter of the text and every line in the vignette. The writer of the 2004 catalog speculated that "...the issue was so short that only early plate states exist" as a possible explanation for the incredible sharpness of this note. At that sale it realized $11,500 and is now the plate note on page 200 of Newman's Fifth Edition. This remains the only example of this note graded by either service, a situation likely to continue far into the future.
