    Beautiful Sword in Hand Note

    Massachusetts June 18, 1776 24s PCGS Extremely Fine 45PPQ.
Beautifully margined, well signed, and an exceptional example of its type. An important rarity, particularly in this grade. The Newman book lists the note at $5,000 in VF and $10,000 in EF. Those numbers merely represent guesstimates as this type in this grade is simply never available. This EF 45PPQ falls just a hair short of the full AU grade. These small Sword In Hand notes are considerably rarer than their larger counterparts where the full size Continental Soldier appears on the back of the note. We have handled quite a number of counterfeits of this issue, but we have never handled or seen a genuine the equal of this note. This exact piece serial number 1839 is the plate note, photographed in color, in the current Fifth Edition of Eric P. Newman's The Early Paper Money Of America. This note is denominated in both sterling (24s) and in dollars ($4). The $4 denomination trumps the 24s, appearing bolder on the face and alone on the back.
