    Description

Genuine June 18, 1776 12 Shillings "Small Sword"

    Massachusetts June 18, 1776 12 Shillings Fr. MA-207. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent.
The June 18, 1776 dollar denomination, or "Small Sword in Hand," notes were printed by Benjamin Edes on coarse paper. They have the vertical format of the Revere "Swords," but the Patriot emblem is smaller and appears on the face rather than the back. The notes were denominated in both dollars (here $2) and shillings. Benjamin Edes (1732-1803) was a member of the Sons of Liberty and publisher of the Boston Gazette, along with his partner, printer John Gill. His ability to evade capture while transporting the Gazette's printing press and type to Watertown, Massachusetts was important for keeping his patriotic newspaper operating. John Gill left the partnership when his political opinions began to diverge from those of Edes. He died in obscurity and poverty despite his influence in the Revolution. This genuine bill is pleasant, but is noted with "Small Edge Splits; Minor Mounting Remnants on Back."

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
