    Description

"Raised" 48 Shilling Massachusetts Sword in Hand

Massachusetts December 7, 1775 48s Choice Very Fine. This lovely Sword in Hand note has had its denomination raised to the highest value in the issue by its Colonial owner. Both the digit corner counters and the text have been carefully redone in pen, as has the "48 Shillings" at the top of the back, above the Sword in Hand vignette. This practice was a relatively common form of fraud, akin to counterfeiting, that continued from Colonial times to the present day. This issue was printed (except for the denomination) by Paul Revere. This is the first example of a raised Sword in Hand that we have had the opportunity to examine, and it will likely arouse considerable interest among this state's many collectors.
