Boldly Printed August 18, 1775 10 Shillings Revere-Engraved "Sword in Hand" Note
    Ex: Boyd Collection

    Massachusetts August 18, 1775 10 Shillings Fr. MA-166 PCGS Extremely Fine 45.
Following the Revere copperplate notes, the next several series of Revere-engraved and printed notes featured the "Sword in Hand" types issued across four dates. These were smaller, vertical format types similar in size to modern playing cards. The faces used texts in a large, three-sided cartouche, and a small vignette at the lower left varying by denomination (the one shilling featured a pine tree like those on the 1652 silver shillings). The backs used the iconic patriot wielding a sword and holding the MAGNA CHARTA scroll, a dynamic image to place on money during the wartime period. Most genuine "Swords" are low grade or damaged; the sturdy paper would split rapidly when circulated. However, all are charming and historic. The following selection of 18 "Swords" is auspicious. It is exceeded in magnitude only by the Boyd and Newman Collection offerings, each sold across multiple auctions. The overall hand-picked quality featured here significant.

This 10 shillings is a boldly printed example and boasts an elite pedigree. The note is full size, untrimmed, and broadly margined along the bottom. The printing clarity is sharply detailed on both face and back. The nicely margined face has the "as printed" appearance. The patriot back vignette's lifelike facial details exemplify Paul Revere's fine engraving craftsmanship to the fullest. A small patch of foxing at the back upper left corner prevents the note from a "PPQ" designation; its excellent originality deserves a premium realization. Ex: Stack's Samuel J. Berngard Sale, July 27-28, 2007, lot 3575 (realized $13,800); Stack's Ford Part X sale, May 26, 2005, lot 4652 (realized $9,775); F.C.C. Boyd Estate. This an important opportunity as very few "Swords" from any of the four issues surpass this example.
