Rare June 8, 1780 "Black Money" Maryland $4 Note - One Of the Finest Known For the Entire IssueMaryland June 8, 1780 $4 PCGS Choice About New 58.
Just this past April, as part of the Eric Newman Collection, we sold an $8 example of this same issue for $7050. That note was described: "This is a rare series of Frederick Green printed notes with few observed from any of the twelve different denominations above Very Fine condition. The "Black Money" notes are so rare that the Boyd Collection had only a few denominations, and it was nowhere close to having the full dozen necessary for completeness. This denomination was not in Boyd, and exceeds the finest Boyd collection note sold in Ford Part XV by at least a half to full grade. That was an Extremely Fine Half Dollar, Lot 8163, and sold for $6,325." This note is also graded by PCGS, and as a 58 it is three points finer. We would expect this note to certainly approach, if not exceed, the recently sold $8 example.
