Maryland June 28, 1780 $2 PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.A well preserved, fully signed $2 Guaranty note and the highest graded MD-116 that we have ever been able to offer. This $2 is also by far the highest graded of just two examples that PMG has inspected to date. In fact, PMG has added only one other MD-116 to its database since we originally offered this piece in our January, 2012 FUN auction. A mere 6,922 pieces were printed and this low printing will always keep this note elusive and especially so in the higher grades. Nicholas Harwood and John Callahan signed the face of this note, while Benjamin Harwood signed the guaranty. The note displays beautiful, original paper surfaces and bold signatures. PMG included a comment on the back of the holder stating that this note was a gift to D.H. Thomas by U.S. Historian J.T. Scharf. Scharf (1843-98) wore many hats, including that of historian. He also served as a soldier and a sailor for the Confederate States of America. The Maryland Historical Society has a large collection of his materials, known as the J. Thomas Scharf Collection, 1730s-1892.
