Description

Maryland June 28, 1780 $2 PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
A well preserved, fully signed $2 Guaranty note and the first example we have been able to offer. This note is also the only example that PMG has graded to date. A mere 6922 pieces were printed. Maryland is the third most difficult state for the guaranteed issue, with New York coming in first and Pennsylvania second. Nicholas Harwood and John Callahan signed the face of this $2 note while Benjamin Harwood signed the guaranty. The note displays beautiful, original paper surfaces and bold signatures. PMG included a comment on the back of the holder stating that this note was a gift to D.H. Thomas by U.S. Historian J.T. Scharf. Scharf (1843-98) wore many hats, including that of historian and served as a soldier and sailor for the Confederate States of America. The Maryland Historical Society has a large collection of his materials, known as the J. Thomas Scharf Collection, 1730s-1892. Given the scarcity of these notes along with the interesting pedigree, our estimate may well prove conservative.

    Estimate: $1,600 - up.
