Impressive Gem New 65PPQ 1767 Maryland $2 Note
Maryland January 1, 1767 $2 Fr. MD-45. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.An impressive note in Gem New 65PPQ condition from a Maryland series where the normally encountered grade is Very Good, split, pinned and/or backed. Long ago, this note was part of very small group of now well-dispersed examples with serial numbers in the vicinity of the No. 11351 observed here. The face type is interesting; the two diminutive "quasi" Spanish Colonial coin vignette denomination protectors readily identify this as a $2 note. This example is beautifully printed, with the back showing a horizontal nature print and the imprint of Jonas Green. The face has most of the left indent design intact, a wavy and natural cut, and extra wide margins at the top and right. The Boyd-Ford note sold in the Part XV Sale, serial number 11370, likely came from the Wayte Raymond holdings, many of which were merged into the combined Ford Colonial note collection. This is nearly perfect in face-to-back registration and the surfaces are immaculate. However, high end notes such as this have been undervalued in the past, especially in relation to some Gem Continental Currency notes, several of which have recently crossed the $10,000 level in Gem New 66PPQ or finer. The Gem New 66PPQ $2/9 from this series that achieved $8,812.50 in the Newman VI sale in April, and the $1 Gem New 65PPQ that reached $14,100 have changed that discrepancy. Very few 1767 Maryland notes reach, let alone exceed, the level of this Gem.
