    Description

John Hart Signed New Jersey March 25, 1776 15s PCGS Choice About New 58.
A lightly handled example with the second signature being that of Colonial patriot John Hart. He was a member of the Second Continental Congress and would go on to vote for and sign the Declaration of Independence. His next position during the Revolutionary War was to serve as the speaker of the newly formed New Jersey General Assembly. He would later take on additional duties as treasurer of the Council of Safety and as a commissioner of the State Loan Office. The British and their Hessian allies advanced into New Jersey in December 1776. Hart's farm was raided and he had to hide in a cave in the Sourland Mountains to avoid capture. The American victory at the Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776 allowed Hart to go home. Later, George Washington and the Continental Army bivouacked on his farm from June 22-24, 1778. This force of 12,000 men participated in the inconclusive Battle of Monmouth four days later on June 28. Hart died on May 11, 1779 at the age of 65.
