Description

Extremely Rare 1774 5 Shillings Typeset Certificate

Province of Georgia 1774 Typeset Certificate 5 Shillings Fr. GA-52. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent.
The 1774 Typeset Certificates are extremely rare with few printed. Only 1,200 5 Shilling notes were printed and the vast majority appear to have been redeemed and destroyed. A fully issued certificate with six signatures. An ornamental border surrounds the text on this uniface example. At lower right is FIVE/SHILLINGS in a simple cartouche. Apparent, as is typical for larger notes of the period, with "Splits and Repairs; Backed." Not often encountered and not priced in Friedberg or Newman. The Boyd note sold in Ford III as Lot 771 for $2,990 was very appealing for the type, likely among the finest. This is a pleasing example of a note that is nearly impossible to obtain.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
