Louisiana France Banque (Royale) January 1, 1720 100 Livres Tournois Pick A17b PMG Very Fine 30.
This previously mounted uniface 168 by 106mm note was printed in France and issued by the Bank Royale in New Orleans. This issue was part of the famed "Mississippi Bubble" debacle involving Scottish financier/schemer John Law and land in New France that burst at the end of 1720. This saw Law removed from office and his subsequent flight into exile. He died of pneumonia in Venice on March 21, 1729. All three required signatures for issuance are present on this note. We have auctioned a few examples of the 10 Livres Tournois over the years, but this is the first auction appearance of the 100 Livres Tournois denomination under our auspices. A block letter "BAN" indent is at left with more complete letters than what is usually seen. This was lot 1679 in Part VIII of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection sale of 2005. Accompanying this lot is Ford's inventory tag which is a coin flip dated "4/26/(19)66." The tag also has the name of who Ford purchased it from. (Total: 2 items)
