Description

Georgia 1776 $4 PCGS Very Fine 20. All five signatures and serial number 3547 remain clearly visible on this appealing $4 orange seal note with the liberty cap emblem. The motto is LIBERTAS CARIOR AURO (freedom is more precious than gold). When the supply of orange ink was exhausted, the printers switched to green ink for the seals on the rest of this issue. The official printer for the colony, Scottish-born James Johnston, opened a print shop in Savannah in early 1762. Prior to that time all of the printing for the colony was done in Charleston, SC. Johnston was a Tory and during the American Revolution he chose to remain loyal to England. As a result, his business was confiscated and run by inexperienced printers resulting in simpler and less uniform designs and the creation of more varieties. Unfortunately, in many cases detailed records were not kept and also records were burned when the British occupied Savannah, leaving future generations without data concerning the number of notes issued for many of the emissions, etc.

    Estimate: $1,700 - up.
