Rare and Historically Important 1762 Georgia Native American Vignetted Type

Georgia 1762 5 Shillings Native American Fr. GA-40b PMG Fine 12 Net.
All notes from this 1762 Georgia series are rare, and this is a significant, historic piece. These notes saw heavy circulation and lower-denominations, like the five shillings, were printed on stiffer laid paper that often cracked or split quickly in commerce. Though split and backed later on thin brown paper, this example is still appealing. A charming, uniface, typeset five shillings bill featuring the folk-art style Native American at lower right between FIVE and SHILLINGS. The figure, grounded by some hatching, is in black with white details for facial features, headdress, skirt, ribs, and musculature. His stance, with right arm bent and hand resting upon hip, and left arm slightly outstretched, appears welcoming rather than menacing. A wide variety of type ornaments comprise the border. The signatures of Clement Martin, James Read, and Alex Wylly are bold at the center; Powell's is perpendicular at the left, and Yonge's is perpendicular at the right (the same signatures as observed on the Newman Collection note). Noted by PMG as "Backed & Reconstructed." The majority known to us are restored, often harshly, but the old repairs preserved the paper integrity and enhanced the eye appeal. Infrequently encountered.
    From the Hunter Collection.
