Georgia 1777 No Resolution Date $4 Fr. GA-86 PMG Very Fine
30.This type is one the great rarities of the Revolutionary War Georgia issues and is only the fourth note we have encountered and confirmed in the past quarter century of sales research. We consider some of the Fr. GA-86 listings in Track & Price as unconfirmed or erroneous. As we discussed in our October 2015 Newman Part VII catalog, the Boyd and Midnight Ride Collections each contained an example of this unpriced rarity. Many of the greatest Colonial note collections were without a representative of the type. With border (c), the only one observed for this type, and four signatures. The present example is cataloged for auction for the first time. In May 2005 the Boyd piece sold for $23,000, the highest realization; that example is currently off the market and has not been offered since. The Midnight Ride note certified by PMG as VF30 EPQ (serial number 15875 and listed on Track & Price) brought $9,775 in our September 2009 sale. The Newman Collection note from the October 2015 Part VII sale realized $3,055, and it had significant staining. This example is very appealing with its natural paper and wide left selvedge. PMG does note some "Tear Repairs," including a closed tear at the lower right partially into the seal. A key for the Georgia colonial note specialist.
