Delaware January 1, 1776 20s PMG Choice Uncirculated 64. Only 12,000 of these 20 shillings notes were printed and this is a very attractive, nicely printed example. This issue was printed on the same paper that was used for Continental Currency. The printer, James Adams, also engraved the cuts. A sheaf of wheat design is seen on the back. Adams worked in Philadelphia for Benjamin Franklin & David Hall for seven years previously. John McKinly, Thomas Collins, and Boaz Manlove were the signers of this note although the signature of Collins has faded. Interestingly, Manlove signed about half of the notes of this issue before he switched sides and became a Loyalist. An arrest order was issued for him, but he and several others were able to evade arrest and eventually reached the Preston, a British ship in the Delaware Bay in March 1777. His property was confiscated and sold by the state.
