Delaware May 1, 1777 6d Gem New. We have only offered four gem examples of this much scarcer Delaware issue and this one certainly appears to be the nicest of all of them. The margins are broader and the centering much better on both face and back than for any of these prior examples. This is the finest example we have ever had for this small change denomination which is much scarcer than the one shilling and higher denominations. This note has superb print quality, with a bold signature and serial number as well as superior punch through embossing. This is from the John Ford collection and this particular note hails from the John Haseltine collection. It is also of historical interest because in pencil on the back it says "Elder 6-11-24 200" which undoubtedly means that Haseltine purchased it from famed numismatist Thomas Lee Elder in 1924 for the princely sum of $2. How times have changed?
