Continental Loan Office Bill of Exchange Third Bill- $36 Jan. 28, 1779 Anderson US-98/NJ-7A. Uncertified, Extremely Fine.
A lovely third bill of exchange on New Jersey that is signed by Francis Hopkinson, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and countersigned by Joseph Borden. Congress authorized roughly $67 million worth of certificates over the course of several years, accounting for roughly ten percent of Congress's income during the Revolutionary War. The bills of credit were transferable and held their value more so than Continental Currency. When candled, the piece clearly reveals the attractive "United States" watermark. This particular piece held sheet position 3, as indicated by the watermark.
