Blue Counterfeit Detector Half Sheets
Continental Currency September 26, 1778 $60-$50-$40-$30-$20-$8-$7-$5 Two Blue Counterfeit Detector Uncut Half Sheets Extremely Fine.A great Continental numismatic item that was lot 519 in Part VI of the John J. Ford Jr. Collection. Previous provenances in reverse order were F.C.C. Boyd, Henry Chapman, and Mathew A. Stickney. This was originally a complete sheet cut in two down the vertical gutter. Both half sheets are pinned together with a small informational sheet that reads, "Taken by the Ship Deane commanded by Capt. Sam'l Nicholson, 1779. From the Ship Glencairn, a box containing a complete set of types and three reams of paper, isinglass (mica in thin, translucent sheets) and silk mixed for counterfeiting the Continental Currency. The enclosed are two sheets of them presented me by Rev. Joseph B. Felt. (signed) Matthew A. Stickney." Felt was the author of A Historical Account of Massachusetts Currency published in 1839 and a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society's. Stickney was an early prominent coin collector who owned many great coins including an 1804 dollar, a 1787 Brasher Doubloon, and an 1815 Half Eagle.
Henry Chapman was a prominent coin dealer for many years and F.C.C. Boyd was the source for Ford's Fractional and many of his Colonial notes. The top sheet has a tear within the selvage at upper left. (Total: 2 sheets)
