Gem New PCGS 66PPQ May 9th, 1776 Five Dollar

Continental Currency May 9, 1776 $5 PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
A truly lovely Continental with strong bright signatures, ideal margins, and the look of a 67 or higher example. In our Newman sale, we sold a 68 of this note for over $11,000. This is not in the same category for grade or appearance, nor is it far enough away to justify the huge spread in price we are likely to see. With the popularity of high end Continentals, we would expect a realization right around $5000. We have sold several 66s of this number, all but one of which have grouped right around that level. There was a single outlier that inexplicably brought even more than the Newman 68.
