July 22, 1776 $2 PCGS 64 PPQ - The Only Uncirculated Example at Either Service

Continental Currency July 22, 1776 $2 PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ.
Our description of the AU example in our Patriotic American Auction in the summer of 2010 read as follows: "To date, this is the highest grade assigned to this number by PMG. Neither service has reported an Uncirculated note. The emblem on this $2 illustrates grain being threshed by a flail with the motto TRIBULATIO DITAT(affliction improves it). The detail is quite clear. The nature print is of three leaves: a raspberry and two filberts." In the intervening five years, this note is the only Uncirculated piece that has surfaced. This entire issue is extremely scarce in high grade, with this lowest denomination unknown in Uncirculated prior to the appearance of this note. When submitted we had anticipated the 65PPQ grade, but PCGS differed by a single point. It certainly has the full appearance of a Gem with wonderful brightness, perfect signatures, excellent margins, and knock-out eye appeal.
