The Finest Known Sixty-Five Dollar January 14, 1779 Continental By Two Points at Both Services

Continental Currency January 14, 1779 $65 PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
This denomination is found only in the eleventh and final issue of Continental Currency. It is the finest known example at both services combined by two full points. PMG has graded a single 64 with nothing higher, and PCGS has graded this 66 with its closest competitor a single 64. The note is beautifully margined with strong signatures and bright red inks in the vignette and at the left end. Both sides are nearly perfectly centered. This would be an extraordinary Continental even if it was a common piece, which it most certainly is not. When last on the market at our FUN 2013 auction, it realized $5875. Prices have spiked since then which can be seen by our realization of $5405 for a PCGS 63 of this same number in October of 2015. The market will decide on the value in April of 2017, but we will guess it will be above...
