Continental Currency May 10, 1775 $1 PMG Very Fine 25. This is an example of the lowest denomination from this scarcer first issue of the first federally issued money. These notes are desirable and avidly collected as a result. The emission was to raise money for the early expenses related to the American Revolution. Taxes were to be levied on a quota basis by each of the 13 Colonies for the redemption of the notes. The same paper was used for all but the $20 denomination that had been used for Pennsylvania money. The thick rag paper was made at Ivy Mills in Chester County, PA located at the west branch of Chester Creek and contained blue threads and mica flakes. The mill was said to have been named Ivy Mills because one of the founders, Thomas Willcox of Devonshire, brought ivy to this country with him and grew it along the walls of the mill. An ivy leaf was used as the company's watermark as well. This moderately circulated $1 Continental retains plenty of appeal. The emblem features an acanthus plant with a weighted bowl upon it. The motto is DEPRESSA RESURGIT (though crushed it recovers). The nature print on the back is ragweed and two willows. Both signatures remain visible.
