Continental Currency January 14, 1779 $4 PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
This $4 note from the final Continental issue is quite available up through About Uncirculated, though very tough fully Uncirculated. Both services combined have graded only six Uncirculated pieces. This is a lovely example from this final issue, with two strong signatures, a clear serial number, and bold red-and-black printing. The vignette of a boar running onto a spear is unusually distinct. The Latin motto surrounding the boar reads, "AUT MORS AUT VITA DECORA," which Newman translates, "Either death or honorable life." It is hard to see what limited this note to the 64 grade and is equally challenging to figure why it is not PPQ, as it is bright, beautiful, and with clear original embossing.
