Description

    Adam Hubley Signed $2 Continental

Continental Currency February 17, 1776 $2 PCGS About New 53PPQ.
This note is the first of a group of Continental and Pennsylvania notes offered in this sale that feature the signature of Adam Hubley. Hubley was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1743 and served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Revolutionary Army and commanded the 11th Pennsylvania Regiment. The 11th Regiment was part of the encampment at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-1778 and records show that Hubley took his military oath there. Today, a monument to the Pennsylvania Regiments that were at Valley Forge stands near the General Wayne monument and marks the commanders of each regiment, including Hubley's name and dates of service.

Hubley was appointed by the Continental Congress to sign notes. Ultimately he signed two issues for the State of Pennsylvania and two for the Continental Congress. He was married to Mary Evans whose brother Joel Evans was also a signer of Pennsylvania currency with Hubley. In 1793, a yellow fever outbreak took the life of Hubley.

Fewer than a half dozen uncirculated examples of this scarce $2 denomination can be found in our auction archive. This fully margined piece shows strong remaining signatures with a center bend most visible on the back of the note.
