Stunning $1/6 Fugio Note-One of the Finest Known
Continental Currency February 17, 1776 $1/6 Fr. CC-19. PCGS Gem
The $1/6, or One Sixth of a Dollar, is the lowest-denomination Continental Currency note, and this is one of the finest known. The three $1/6 positions were across the top row of the 12-note pane (or half sheet). Franklin's sundial motif and two mottoes are at the right on this type as is the misspelling, CURRENCEY, in the right border. A gorgeous example from the lower serial-numbered pane from the original double sheet. The many attributes stand out plainly: The margins are even and wide on all sides; face-to-back registration is perfect; paper surfaces are immaculate; and the inking is bold. Plate B. No. 386967. Signed by B. Brannan in red. We have cataloged and sold only one other $1/6 in PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. That example realized $11,750 in our CSNS sale in April 2015. There are three Gem New 66PPQ $1/6 Fugio notes in the PCGS population report: the cited sales-record note and the two Newman Collection examples cataloged here. The Gem originality is evident, and the impressive pedigree enhances this note's stature.

A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
