DescriptionContinental Currency April 11, 1778 $8 PCGS About New 53.
Lightly handled corners are all we can see to account for the grade. The original embossing is present and this rare Yorktown $8 note has excellent eye appeal. In our Long Beach Auction last fall, we sold a PCGS 58 for $2467. The rarity of the issue is due to the large quantity of excellent counterfeits sponsored by the British that undermined these notes shortly after they appeared. The Continental Congress called the entire issue in for exchange by its January 2, 1779 resolution. The exchange was to be accomplished prior to June 1, 1779. Few examples escaped the exchange, and the majority of the notes that are seen are counterfeits. This high-end beauty is absolutely genuine, and very rare in this grade.
