DescriptionContinental Currency April 11, 1778 $40 Contemporary Counterfeit PCGS Choice About New 55.
Counterfeits were a tool of warfare used by an enemy to devalue the currency of their foe. As such, they are important historical relics, as heavily counterfeited issues were often discontinued quickly. This piece is a wonderful example of the difference between authentic and counterfeit notes. The "nature" print on back is crude and far too geometric when compared to an authentic example. This is one of the nicest examples of this denomination that we have handled with a similar Choice About New 55 realizing $575 in June of 2011. The paper is bright and attractive with a strong signature at lower left.
