Continental Congress Lottery Tickets Three Different Classes November 18, 1776 PCGS Graded.
The Continental Congress authorized lottery tickets in 1776. The lottery was deemed a way of raising funds that would be less objectionable than further taxes. It was poorly received by the public as the payout percentage was lower than that of other lotteries common at the time. These are seldom seen and are a very nice association item for a collection of Continental Notes. Often these were signed by signers of Continental Currency. Two of the three tickets offered in this lot were signed by George Campbell, who also signed Continental Notes. The Class the First ticket grades About New 50 Apparent with small edge tears, the Class the Second ticket grades Choice About New 58, and the remainder Class the Third ticket grades Extremely Fine 45 Apparent with minor ink erosion. The Class the First ticket is endorsed on the back with, "Ticket in 1 Class / United State (sic) / Lottery." These three tickets crossed our auction block to the tune of $1,057 at our Long Beach September, 2016 auction. (Total: 3 items)
