Scarce Windham Turnpike Company 17¢ Remainder

Windham Turnpike Company 17¢ Remainder Circa 1800's to 1810's PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. Although the holder lists Massachusetts, Windham is in Connecticut. The denominations issued were 1¢, 3¢, 4¢, 5¢, 12 1/2¢, 17¢, and 25¢, with this 17¢ being the scarcest denomination. Wide margins are found on this typeset remainder printed on sturdy wove paper and displaying bold embossing and good color overall. The scrollwork border includes flowers and other attractive designs. The Windham Turnpike Road ran from Coventry, through Windham to Plainfield. The existing old traveled country road was turned over to the Windham Turnpike Company in 1799, and the company was permitted to erect a toll-gate near the dividing line between Plainfield and Canterbury. General James Gordon, a member of several turnpike companies, served as turnpike commissioner of the state.
