Autographed Letter from Caesar A. Rodney to his Father, Thomas Rodney. Nov. 26, 1787. Not graded.
Dated November 26, 1787. Sent to Thomas Rodney of Dover, (DE). Seen with some splits, tears, and tape reinforcement but in generally good condition. Caesar A. Rodney was the son of Thomas Rodney and nephew of Declaration of Independence signer, Caesar Rodney. Caesar A. Rodney ultimately had a storied career in public service, serving in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as filling the role of Attorney General under both Jefferson and Madison. Finally, he ended his career, and ultimately his life, as U.S. Ambassador to Argentina. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1789, which means that he was likely attending that fine institution when he wrote this letter home around Thanksgiving Day 1787. It reads in part....

    "Dear Papa,
I received your letter of the eighth inst. I am pleased to hear that you received all the things that I sent you, but as the shallop had not returned before you wrote, I did not hear whether Cousin Lettitia's things with a few pamphlets that Mr. Magaw sent to you got down safe. I am very glad to hear that Aunts family have recovered. I have wrote two letters to Sister and sent her a book which she wrote to me for. Dear Papa I hope you will move up in the spring or sooner if you can get your business settled. I have had one fit of the cholic but have perfectly recovered. The commencement was the 24th inst. which was very grand. My class are now learning Rhetoric but we are to begin Logic at Christmas. Dear Papa when you send my books please to send me three volumes of the Roman history for Mr. Davidson professor of the languages says that I must read them and I shall take a great deal of care of them - have all my books hunted up for chief of them are in my book case but do not forget my Kinnets antiquities..."
