Likely Unique and Stylish Sheridan Scrip

(Unknown, New York) - A. Sheridan "IOU One Penny" Jan'y 1790 Newman page 311. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent.
This small change bill is very likely unique, the only example we have ever encountered, and stylish. A small format rectangular note printed on laid paper with a simple vine border enclosing the text and vignette. "IOU One Penny" is across the center; beneath at the right is the issuer name, "A. SHERIDAN." At the top is a very quaint and well-detailed swan vignette with the date below. A mysterious issuer, but Eric Newman attributed and placed the bill with the New York issuers and plated it on page 311 of the 5th edition. A beautiful piece, but noted with "Edge Splits; UR Corner Replaced," which was done a bit crudely. An important early American scrip note possessing dual appeal for Colonial and Obsolete collectors.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
