    Blue Turnpike Gate Scrip

(Connecticut) Hartford & New Haven Turnpike Gate No. "1" Undated (Ca. 1799) 4 Cents Newman page 117. PCGS About New 53.
This is from an intriguing series of thick paper notes printed from copper plates engraved by Amos Doolittle. The notes have been collected by Colonial as well as Obsolete Currency collectors, particularly those interested in unusual denominations (the use of "Mills" is also encountered on this series). Printed in all blue, and much scarcer than the notes printed in black ink. The charming rebus indicates passage for one horse and rider alongside the text, "& empty Hors Cart." The left end panel has an unusual artistic treatment. Signed by Jas. Hillhouse. Very scarce, and this is a sharp example with very minor handling. We sold a blue 6 Cents 3 Mills graded PCGS Choice About New 58 for $2,232.50 in Newman Internet 1.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
