Description

    St. John's, LC- The Mechanics Bank of St. John's $5 18__ Ch# 440-10-02R
This institution was another of the many that appeared during the "Hard Times" of 1837 that were unchartered and existed only to line the pockets of their promoters. As with many of these "banks," the notes they issued did not circulate in their issuing location, but rather in Buffalo, New York, which apparently was ground zero for the circulation of fraudulently issued notes from both the United States and Canada. This example is a Fine remainder.
