    Listed as Unissued in Charlton

St. Catherines, UC- Niagara District Bank $10 1853 Ch. # 530-10-??
We sold an identical example (save for the grade) of this enigmatic note in our Long Beach sale, and the comments we made there apply here as well. We have looked this note over numerous times and cannot detect any evidence that it was raised (which is the only $10 Charlton lists, and bears a different design), and the printing quality does not suggest a counterfeit. Also, this note bears a different serial number (although a close difference) to the example we sold last September. That piece realized $4312.50 against a pre-sale estimate of $2000-3000 and had a corner missing. This example grades an unimpaired Very Fine. Our consignor advises that these were the only two examples in the collection he purchased, making the estimate fairly easy for this rare and attractive piece.
