HM Edward VIII Bank of Canada Proposed Portrait - Part I.
Edward VIII is one of the most controversial characters in the modern history of the British Monarchy. He was King of the United Kingdom and its related Dominions for less than a year. After his accession to the throne on January 20, 1936, he announced his engagement to Willis Simpson, an American socialite and two-time divorcee. The throne of England was also a religious seat, which elevated him to the head of the Church of England. Religious conflicts surrounding both of Simpson's ex-husbands who were still living (remarrying was allowed only if the former spouse was no longer living), as well as his indifference to the required political conventions required of the King, led him to abdicate the throne by December 11, 1936. He was succeeded by his brother, George VI. George VI was placed on the $1 through $50 denominations of the 1937 Series. Edward VIII's short reign produced this portrait of him that was engraved by the Canadian Bank Note Company for the Bank of Canada. Overall dimensions are approximately six by nine inches. This item is not graded. There will be no returns on this lot for any reason.
