Harbor Grace, Newfoundland- Archibald Boot & Shoe Factory 25¢ July 1, 1898
The black ink on red paper adds to the appeal of this scrip along with the lovely central vignette of the head of a Newfoundland dog with "Fidelity" on his collar. The design on the back features 25c. counters within a printed design. The company was originally named Harbour Grace Boot and Shoe Factory, but was renamed after proprietor Frank Howard Archibald died and one of his sons began running the company. The company remained in business for another 40 years until it closed in 1932. Charlton's Canadian Merchant Scrip reference only lists the 25¢ denomination with a date of March 1st, 1898. However, this example is dated July 1st, 1898. PMG Very Fine 25 Net with tears cited as the reason for the net grade.
