Halifax, NS- The Bank of Nova Scotia $10 Jan. 2, 1929 Ch. # 550-18-20
This note comes from one of the oldest and most important of Canada's banking institutions. Founded in 1831, this bank grew slowly but steadily during its formative years, with the bank opening branches and establishing relationships as far afield as London and New York. Financing Nova Scotia's mercantile trade led to branches throughout the Caribbean as well. By 1920, the bank was doing business in every Canadian province and had thirty branches outside of Canada. In the 1950's, this institution was among the first to make a market in gold, trading in both certificates and bullion, and maintains a leading position in that market today. Although dated 1929, this $10 note is the first example from this bank offered here, due to the rather odd Charlton numbering system, which is organized by design type rather than issue date. This design type happened to be one of the longest lived of any used by any chartered bank, with notes of this type issued continuously from 1877 through 1929. Extremely Fine-About Uncirculated.
