Very Rare Merchants' Bank of Halifax $10

Halifax, NS- Merchants' Bank of Halifax $10 Jan. 2, 1896 Ch. # 465-20-14
A very rare note from the "No Portrait" issues of 1880-98. This $10 is valued only in the grades of G and VG to the tune of $5000 and $10,000 respectively in Charlton. Only two notes for this number are listed on page 214 of Canadian Paper Money Society Note Registry 2013. One example has taken up residence in the National Currency Collection. The other piece did not have its serial number recorded when it last appeared in public at the Toronto Coin Club auction of 1964. That leaves us with the possibility that the current offering has finally returned to the spotlight after a 50-year interval, or it is a new serial number for the census. These facts make us believe there is a total population of either two or three. PMG Fine 12.
