Impressive 1924 $50,000 "Bank Special"

DC-39P $50,000 1924 Front and Back Proofs PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The 1924 $50,000 is referred to as a "bank legal" or "bank special." Like the $100,000 Gold Certificates of the United States, these massive denominations were used only to ease bank to bank transactions and reduce the amount of cash needed to facilitate large transfers. The Canadian bank specials were payable to the bearer, but only banks established under the Bank Act of Canada.

These notes are oversized compared the large size Canadian notes, with a massive amount of lathework on face and back to deter counterfeiting. King George V and HM Queen Mary are paired here, using the "younger" versions of their vignettes from the high denomination notes of 1911. The overall layout, and intricate engraving make for an impressive display, something that is as impressive as any design worldwide. This face and back proof are perfectly matched for grade and eye appeal, with the face proof exhibiting a minor split.
From the Yuri Solovey Collection of Canada (Total: 2 notes)
