Rare 1923 $1 Bronze Seal Experimental Note

    DC-25iT 1923 (B) $1 Test Note
An extremely rare piece which is the first example of its kind we have been privileged to offer. This is one of the approximately 314,000 pieces known to have been printed (about 78,500 sheets), in a test sponsored by the Finance Department of the Government of Canada in 1928-1929 to determine the appropriateness of using paper produced by a Canadian firm over the American paper imported from the Crane Company of Massachusetts (which has long been the exclusive supplier to the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing). The notes were distributed to various provinces and circulated without fanfare. In fact, they were so unpublicized that apparently none were retained by collectors, as the new Charlton catalogue notes that the highest grade example recorded to date is a Very Fine-Extremely Fine specimen. The catalogue indicates that only twenty five examples in all grades have been reported, and assigns this piece a value of $1700 in Fine and $2700 in Very Fine. Considering the rarity of this PCGS graded Fine 15 note, it would not surprise us at all to see those numbers surpassed well before bidding ends on this lot this afternoon.
