    Description

    Elusive Barclays Bank First Issue

Canada Montreal, PQ- Barclays Bank $5 3.9.1929 Ch.# 30-10-02b PMG Very Fine 25.
An elusive and eye appealing 5 dollar denomination from the first issue of Barclays Bank (Canada) after it established operations in Montreal in 1929. This well preserved example along with the other denominations from this first issue were produced in the typical large size format of the era before the size of the banknotes was reduced in 1935. All denominations from this first series are very scarce, and only two examples of this Charlton number with the Stevenson signature are registered in the PMG Population Report. Minor restoration is mentioned by the grading company but does not negate from the overall appearance on this outstanding banknote. Interestingly, Charlton's Canadian Bank Notes catalog indicates this serial number (A062643) as the highest numbered $5 known to survive.
